With the summer thunderstorms can come torrential rains. On June 30,1988 thunderstorms drenched eastern Kansas. The heaviest rains were concentrated in south Douglas and northern Franklin counties. An incredible 12.21 inches drenched Worden. The heavy rains caused an overflow of the Lone Star Lake and a wall of water two to four feet deep swept through the town of Lone Star, flooding every home in the town. The heavy rains also caused flooding in many streams and rivers in the area. The gauge on the Wakarusa River, near Lawrence, went from a reading of 5 feet on June 29th to 29 feet at noon on June 30th……6 feet above flood stage.
