The root word for meteorology is “meteor” meaning of the sky. As we move into August, it is a great time to remember one of the more famous meteor showers: The Perseids. The peak of the Perseids shower usually occurs just before mid-August. In the northern hemisphere you can get your best view if you lie out on a reclining lawn chair, with your feet pointed between the southern and eastern horizon. Look directly up. Decent numbers of meteors can be seen beginning around 10 p.m. local time, but the best show picks up after midnight and continues until dawn. Clear, mild summer nights make a meteor watch a fun outdoor activity. Just remember the mosquito protection!
