Several weeks ago there was a massive wind storm in eastern KS, blowing down trees and downing power lines. August 1st marks the anniversary of another such storm. In 1986 a powerful thunderstorm produced 100 mph winds and large hail in eastern Kansas and southwestern Missouri. It was one of the worst non-tornadic thunderstorms of record for Kansas. Property damage totaled over 71 million dollars’ worth of damage, and 19 people were injured. Crops were mowed to the ground in places and roofs blown off buildings along its path which was 150 miles long and 30 miles wide. The destruction trailed from near Abilene to southeast of Pittsburg.
