In 2013, Southwest and Center Kansas, along with the rest of the state, had a reminder that February still remains in meteorological winter. That year, a major winter storm brought heavy snow and near blizzard conditions to much of southwestern and central Kansas on the 20th and 21st. Snowfall amounts of at least 10 inches fell along and east of a line from Wakeeney to Dodge City to Coldwater. Amounts of 18 to 21 inches were reported from near Hays to near Larned. And although the snowfall amounts were greatest in those areas, the rest of the state saw the edges of the storm, with an inch of snow reported as far into Southeast KS as Columbus. Temperatures after the system were also distinctly winter-like. Lows in the teens and single digits were common. The coldest low was a -6 °F reported at Brewster, Thomas County, on the 22nd.
