Have you ever wondered how much rain has fallen? Or where the amount reported came from? Most reports are from the National Weather Service Cooperative Network, a group of volunteers who observe and record the weather. There is another volunteer network, that YOU can be a part of: CoCoRaHS. That stands for Community Collaborative Rain Hail and Snow Network. Volunteers using a standard rain gauge measure precipitation, including rain, hail and snow. The relatively inexpensive gauge allows for a denser distribution than more complex monitoring systems. With over 10,000 registered observers, the network is now international in scope, these volunteers help record the complexity of the storm systems.
